The renovation of this Upper East Side residence required a complex approach—balancing between building modern-day comforts for a family with growing children and preserving the powerful concepts and elements from its 70s’ renovation. The project required extensive renovation and additions, in which the new design tied harmoniously with the previous one, realized by a prominent New York architect.
The house was enlarged by entirely rebuilding the rear façade and extending the third and fourth floors by twenty feet. The fifth floor was also enlarged, leaving twenty-five feet at the top of the house for an outdoor deck space, adjacent to the newly built guest and gym rooms. Three-quarters of the backyard were excavated to create a large service area for the house, while still retaining its recreational use as a dry patio surrounded by a garden.
Seventy-five miles of wires were installed throughout to equip the house with state-of-the-art automation, audio video and security control systems.
